A pet's microchip serves as a unique identifier, (think of it as your pet’s social security number) and is implanted for security purposes. To ensure its effectiveness, the microchip must be registered with a legitimate registry so that the unique number can be correlated back to your pet's information in a database. When registering a microchip, you will be required to provide details about your pet, such as breed, birthdate, and gender, as well as owner information, including name, address, and phone number. This information can be accessed by scanning the microchip with a compatible reader, allowing veterinarians, shelters, and other facilities to retrieve necessary information in the event your pet is lost.
It is important to note that a microchip is not a GPS device and cannot be used to track your pet's whereabouts. However, a registered microchip provides proof of ownership and can help reunite you with your pet if they are lost.
