They bond closely with their humans and love being involved in everything going on around the house. They are playful, smart, are are expressive in their head movements and vocalizations. They are natural barkers and will alert you to any sound or movement near your home. With consistent training from puppyhood, this is very manageable. Without it, a Yorkie can decide they run the house. They are best suited for homes where someone is around often. They do not like being left alone for long periods and can develop separation anxiety. With the right owner, a Yorkie is one of the most devoted and entertaining companions you will find.

Do Yorkies shed, and are they hypoallergenic?

Yorkies shed very little. Their coat is more like human hair than traditional dog fur. They have no undercoat, so loose hair tends to stay in the coat rather than falling around the house; this makes them a much better choice for allergy sufferers than most breeds. Keeping a Yorkie groomed is a true commitment, especially if you keep the coat long. Their fine, silky hair tangles and mats easily. A full-length coat needs frequent brushing, almost every single day, and professional grooming every four to eight weeks. Most Yorkie owners choose a shorter cut, which makes daily life much easier. The Puppy Cut or Teddy Bear Cut trims the coat to one to two inches all over, giving the dog a soft, rounded look that is easy to maintain with brushing two to three times a week. At home, use a fine-toothed metal comb and a slicker brush. Clean around the eyes since Yorkies are prone to tear staining.

"Teacup" Yorkies are not officially recognized by the AKC as a breed standard, but the term typically refers to Yorkies weighing under four pounds as adults. Posh Puppies Indiana does not focus on teacup breeding because extreme miniaturization of a breed can create health risks. Very small Yorkies are more fragile, more prone to hypoglycemia, more at risk for bone fractures, and more likely to have organ complications. Their lifespan is often shorter than a standard-sized Yorkie, as well. A standard Yorkie weighs up to seven pounds per AKC breed standard. That is already a small dog, and an extra two pounds less is hardly noticeable.

What are the official Yorkie coat colors? What is a Parti Yorkie?

Standard Yorkies are born black and tan. As they grow, the black areas gradually transition to a silver-steel, blue-gray tone, while the tan lightens to a golden or bright tan. This color change usually begins around six months and continues through the first two years. Many new owners are surprised by how much the coat changes from puppyhood to adulthood, so it's important to set the right expectations.
A Parti Yorkie is a purebred Yorkshire Terrier with a three-color coat: white, black or blue, and tan. The white is caused by a recessive gene that must be present in both parents to show up in puppies. Parti Yorkies are fully AKC-registerable. They are not a separate breed and have the same temperament and size as standard Yorkies. Both traditional and parti Yorkies make equally wonderful companions. The difference is purely in coat color and pattern.

Tracheal collapse is also possible, which causes a dry, honking cough and worsens with excitement or pressure on the neck. Always use a harness instead of a collar. Weight control helps significantly. Dental disease is common due to their small, crowded jaws. Patellar luxation, a slipping kneecap, affects many toy breeds like the Yorkies, also. Liver shunts, though less common, are seen at higher rates in Yorkies than most other breeds. Routine vet visits, proper feeding schedules, frequent dental care, and a harness on every walk go a long way toward a long, healthy life.
