Pomeranian puppies from reputable  breeders typically run $1,500 to $3,000. Pomeranian puppies are in high demand and they look adorable in their photos, so they are commonly listed by scammers at "too good to be true" prices under $1,000.

Pricing within responsible programs varies based on coat color, markings, eye color, and especially size. Smaller Pomeranians are often more expensive because they have smaller litters, and the demand for them is higher. "Teacup" Pomeranians and "Micro" Pomeranians are common terms for extra small pups, although these terms are not officially used by dog clubs like the AKC.  "Throwback" Pomeranians are larger dogs than the breed's average size. They often grow to the 10 to 20 pound range. They are fully purebred and registered; they simply don't meet the AKC conformation size standard of 3 to 7 pounds.

Pomeranians are small, delicate dogs that need extra attention to detail when it comes to raising them, administering their rounds of puppy shots and dewormings, and when providing early socialization.

Do Pomeranians shed and are they hypoallergenic?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Pomeranians shed. Pomeranians have a dense double coat consisting of a soft, insulating undercoat and a longer, coarser outer coat. Their double coat sheds year-round at a moderate-to-above-average level. They typically have two major seasonal shedding periods (usually spring and fall) called "blowing coat" where the undercoat releases all at once. During a blowout, the volume of loose fur is significant. If you are not brushing daily during these periods and staying ahead of it, you will find fur on furniture, clothing, and in corners of rooms you didn't know existed. Brushing two to three times per week keeps shedding manageable and prevents the undercoat from matting into the outer coat, which happens faster than most new owners expect.

Further, Pomeranians are not hypoallergenic. They shed both hair and dander, the primary allergen trigger for most dog-allergic people. If you have a known dog allergy, a Pomeranian is not the right breed. If you are considering a low-allergen dog, a Toy or Miniature Poodle or Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) is a more appropriate choice.

How to Pomeranians behave and what is the Pomeranian's temperament really like?

The Pomeranian originated from Nordic sled and herding dogs — working breeds that make quick decisions without waiting for instruction. TThe Pomeranian is a confident, alert, deeply loyal dog with a personality that is  larger than its tiny size. They bond hard to their families and thrive on attention and engagement. They rarely show fear and are also known to be vocal communicators. As natural watchdogs they notice everything and may be quick to bark at visitors, sounds from outside, movement through a window, or sounds in the distance. Barking is is to be expected with Pomeranians. This is manageable with consistent training from puppyhood, but you cannot train a Pomeranians to never bark entirely. It it is worth knowing before you bring one into an apartment with thin walls or a household that values peace and quiet.

That being said, Pomeranians are independent thinkers and many owners appreciate their ability to understand what you're asking. Short training sessions, positive reinforcement, and food motivation work reliably. Harsh corrections do not. What also doesn't work is treating a Pomeranian like it's too small to require training.  A Pom raised without clear expectations will run the household with barking, chewing, and stubbornness.  that this is the correct arrangement.

Per the AKC breed standard, Pomeranians weigh 3 to 7 pounds at maturity, with 4 to 6 pounds considered the ideal show weight. They stand 7 to 12 inches at the shoulder. This puts them in the smallest classification: Toy Group. Their size makes them fragile, so Pomeranians do best with older children who understand how to interact with a small dog through calm interactions, no rough play, and no picking the dog up without supervision. In households with toddlers or very young children, there are risks like falling from a child's arms, an accidental step, or accidentally hurting the puppy during play. enthusiastic but clumsy handling can injure a dog this size. This is not a knock on the breed's temperament — Poms are affectionate and playful — it is a simple physical reality of their size. Families with young children who want a Pomeranian should plan to supervise all interactions carefully until children are old enough to be trusted with handling.     With other pets, Pomeranians tend to do well when properly introduced and socialized from an early age. They are not intimidated by larger dogs — which is an endearing quality that also creates a genuine safety concern, because a Pom that challenges a large dog has no idea what it is risking. Homes with large dogs require supervision and management until the dynamic is well established. With other small dogs and cats they have been raised alongside, Pomeranians are generally friendly and adaptable.
